Abstract

Of 404 cases in a short-term maternity-stay program studied retrospectively, 70 percent enrolled for financial reasons. A total of 251 mothers (62.1 percent of the study group) completed the program. Most of those who left did so because of inability to pay. No mothers had to be readmitted to the hospital after discharge and only four infants (1.7 percent). Of 238 infants discharged from the hospital under the program, 25.6 percent failed to return for the required newborn follow-up examination within 36 hours. It is believed that the early maternal-infant discharge program is a safe alternative when strict criteria are developed and complied with, and is beneficial to both the patient and the hospital.
